Glass in the oven?
I want to make a casserole, but the dish I have is glass and doesnt have anything wrote on the bottom stating that it is oven proof. It is a large oval dish and is about 1/2 inch thick. Please help cause I’m hungry!

You cannot put it in the oven unless it has written on the bottom “tempered.” I got a very bad burn from an actual casserole dish that split in the middle and the contents fell out on my feet and legs. I wouldn’t use the dish. Just because it is 1/2″ thick does not mean it will not break. If you have a metal baking pan for cakes, you could use that safely. Or set the glass dish on a cookie sheet in case it does break.

if it’s a casserole dish it should be fine! look for Pyrex, they always work awesome! 1/2 in should have no problem in the oven

Sounds oven-proof to me. Usually thick glass dishes are made for ovens. I have several, they work great.

It should be fine. Just don’t put a cold dish (out of the freezer of refrigerator) straight into the oven. Or put a hot dish in cold water or in the freezer. It’s the temperature change that is bad.

It’s probably ok. 🙂 I would suggest you NOT go over 400 degrees with it, though.

Yes IF it is a cassarole dish, it is oven safe if it’s that thick. If it breaks, you’ll know …. :s

As long as you haven’t pulled the dish directly from the freezer, it will be OK. Glass dishes are great for “casseroles”, so much so that my family identifies them as “glass casseroles”. Follow the directions for baking your casserole, as well as noting whether you need to “grease” the dish. Some recipes call for lower oven temperatures or a different cooking time if they are cooked in glass casserole dishes. If it doesn’t have special instructions in the recipe for glass dishes, then just go for it. But make sure you aren’t putting in directly into the oven from the freezer. Enjoy!
