Crystal, Bavarian or otherwise, is a glass which usually contains a high percentage of lead (at least 24 % Lead oxide).

Common glass contains only trace amounts of lead or other heavy metals.

The color can be changed by the addition of other metallic elements (for example Cobalt is usually added to make dark blue glass).

The fake glass used for use in the cinema industry is not glass at all, but a thin sheet of sugar.

Fake glass can be made out of varoius kinds of sugars boiled together, glucose and sackarose. Kind of like making candy actually. The real trick is making it into a bottle. This requires expensive heat resistant silicon rubber. And you have to make a two piece mould out of a real bottle too.
