But you can do it with a soldering iron, but only if it’s one built for use with high melting point solders.
And this will only work on certain types of glass, nothing toughened or high melting point.
You also won’t get a clean hole, despite not wanting it drilling is the best option

yes takes a while though

I don’t know for sure but I would think the stress of the heat would crack the glass first.

You need to get it above 600C, and probably higher. So doubtful.

MOST soldering irons won’t work. An acetylene torch will work though. But be careful, you have to cool the glass slowly enough after punching a hole through it that it won’t crack.

Glass is an amorphous solid. Wait long enough and you could put a hole in it with a pencil.

Soldering iron, less than 400C
Soda glass melts about 1000C
You do the math.
Doesn’t matter what the Hertz are!
What you need is a blow torch but having asked a question like this proves that you don’t have the skills to do it safely.

What’s wrong with drilling? That’s the way it’s usually done. You could probably get a glass shop to do it for a few bucks.

Totally plausible. I litrally just burned a 1/2 inch an 1/3 inch hole into a 40 oz glass bottle and a tall mexican coca cola bottle. All you need to do is pre heat your oven to shot as it gets. Grab some oven mits an a tube that will fit into the top of your desired bottle. (This works best with two people) have one person holding the tube with the oven mits ready. Have the other person with a map pro torch heat the bottle up for a little while having the other person spin the bottle as necessary. When you feel the bottle is sufficiently heated, keep the torch on the desires spot until it is red hot. Have the other person blow very gently into the tube untill a larger or small (depending on how big of a hole u want) bubble starts popping out. When the bubble is the right size simply blow harder to pop the bubble. Then quickly but gently put on the oven mits, remove the tube, an carefully carry the bottle to the oven. Every five or ten minutes turn down the oven and eventually off. And presto!

About Me
ALES LOMBERGAR is one of the few artisans in Europe who still practice the ancient art of glass acid etching which flourished in the late 19th century. Decorations are applied with resin resists by hand and then exposed to acid baths, with no machinery used. More information here.
