Wines by the glass in a classier fashion.?
Okay, I guess this isn’t so much a question as it is a suggestion for all the restaurant and bar managers out there.
Most restaurants pour their wines by the glass into a glass or small carafe at the bar and then bring the wine to the diner’s table.
A few of the really classy places I have been to in Montreal and Quebec City would bring the bottle to the table, show me the label, then give me a sample pour to ensure the wine is okay before filling my glass.
It’s a little extra effort for the server, but I really can’t see how an establishment could go wrong doing this!

Here’s the deal.
This process is very time consuming. It would not work in a high volumne establishment.
This is an excellent form of service for some placed.
I at least would like to see the glass poured in front of me.

maybe those other places couldn’t afford to hire a sommelier
they don’t always teach food servers how to pour and serve wine.

Well, to be honest I haven’t done much travelling if any really, however I am from Vancouver, and when you go to a good reastaraunt around here they do do that, but you get the cheap people who cry about how full their glasses are, and when you free pour people generally pour more then four onces, which adds up for the bar expenses.

I think it’d be a great idea. However not many establishments are excited about the chance to sell a single glass of wine. If you don’t like a wine simple return it after the first sip. Also, don’t try a new expensive wine for the first time when going out so you won’t be disappointed. Cheers!

Where have you been eating, Denny’s? A good restaurant will pour your wine by the glass at your table when they serve the appropriate course.
