Why do they stick birdshaped stickers onto windows and large expanses of glass?
They tell me it’s to keep the birds from flying into the glass, but surely they’ll go “hey, look, a brother bird is flying there, that must means it must be safe.” and then splatter?
Or do birdbrains work differently to ours?

I saw this really cool photo of someones patio window the other week. It had a big greasy Owl shape splatter on it. It was really detailed. Ouch.

No, it’s actally a trap for cats. They see the bird, jump… and then… SPLAT.
Great fun!

Gives the windowlickers something to aim for.

no the sticker is usually of a bigger bird and therefore will stop the smaller birds flying into its airspace. I think I need to get one because the wood pidgeons in my area keep bombing into my kitchen and bedroom windows and leaving huge marks.

They use hawk shapes which keep the other birds away.

Sorry luv. It just makes birds aware that there is an obstruction. Maybe birds don’t really have bird brains?

No, at least with respect to this, they work the same way ours do.
When you’re walking along and you see someone else walking
along, do you walk into them?
Birds use sight primarily for collision avoidance. Using a bird
as an indicator of a window is pretty ingeninous in that you
can pretty well guarentee that another bird will be familiar with
what it is.

Either the trap for cats or they are just extremely tacky people and probably have a flashing santa hanging out of their chimney at christmas!

Who is this “they” you keep referring to?
Rob

They are usually of larger birds, and small birds (i.e. most birds who live around inhabited areas) do not want to mess with large birds. The stickers look tacky, but they’re better than having dead birds in your yard (my mother in law used to have that problem)

Birds don’t see glass, they see a space so fly headlong into the glass and most likely kill themselves hitting the glass at speed. Putting images on the glass alerts the birds that it is not a space.

The idea is to use the silhouette of a raptor like a hawk or an eagle, which is supposed to scare the birds away.
Do you think we should put Mr. Rogers stickers on patio glass doors to scare off the children?

the bird shape is supposed to be a hawk or other bird of prey – the idea is to scare birds away so they don’t fly into the glass. it doesn’t work.
I’ve seen owl and hawk statues that are supposed to scare pigeons away. the pigeons just sit on them and crap.
it doesn’t even have to be glass. I’ve seen a bird fly into the side of a house. the term “bird brain” is derogatory for a reason!

They have all these birdshaped stickers left over from the great failed “if we put birdshaped stickers on the side of jet engines maybe so many of the stupid little flying rats won’t get sucked into the jet engine and crash the plane” experiment.
