Who can transfer negatives from glass plates to other media.?
I have a number of negatives of photos taken between 1890 and 1913. They are on glass plates. I would like to get these transferred onto some other media. Is there a specialist who could do this? Any info re technique or info re shops in the UK would be welcome.

We inherited a box full and scanned them onto the computer with a normal scanner, which worked OK. Since they will be mostly black and white you can scan them at a high resolution in black and white and the files arnt huge, but you still keep some quality (obviously prints from the glass plates will be better than you will get with scanning and printing, but depending how large a print you make, you might not notice the difference (if you want, say an A1 size print you might))

You should be able to do them yourself if you buy a slide scanner which will scan them on to your computer. Alternatively, you can use a company [for example http://www.pixstudio.co.uk/ who will do it for you and put them onto a CD for you.

Try any decent high street photo processing shop – they should be able to do it for you – although it might cost a bit!

Just get them scanned from anyone who has a negative mode scanner and do it on highest possible res.

It could get very expensive and time consuming.
I have about 400 kilos of 8×10 glass plates and I have slowly been making contact prints of the best ones. I have been at it for about two and a half years … so far

the future is digital get with the programme and recycle your outdated glass, no-one uses this out dated medium anymore and for good reason! It’s awful to work in.

have you tried scanning them into your computer, a good quality scanner should be quite capable of doing this. welsh che above me does no appreciate the finner thing in life like a real camera. If they are of good quality you could donnate them to the british photographic society were they would be preserved

take them to a professional photo processor and he will turn them into prints or digitalize them, or both.
Most of those plates were very large, I have one here that is 8×10 and several that are either 4×5 or so, and I did contact prints with them by laying them on the paper and exposing them that way.
