When I put a magnifying glass at distance equal the focal length, I see objects blur and not in focus, why?

I was thinking of building a telescope so I bought myself a cheap magnifying glass. I put it above a table and played with the distance from the table until I found the focal point wich was about 70 mm (about 2.7 inch). Then I put the lens at the same distance from my eye and aimed at far objects. I expeceted to see them clear but when the distance was exactly the focal length (I could not measure exactly but that’s how it felt), the picture was blur and I could not see anything. I expected it however to be clear. When I use this as a magnifying glass though it does the job pretty good.
Thanks in advance for any answer.
