what is the best and safest method of etching with battery acid?
i am interested in starting to etch on steel or other hard metals. and i need to know the best way to do this.

For starters, don’t use battery acid. It contains lead salts that are persistent poisons and contribute nothing to the etching process. Reading about the process will help you a lot, but not as much as hands-on work with someone who knows what they are doing.
