What are some crafty uses for glass Christmas ornaments, besides hanging them on the tree?

I have LOADS AND LOADS of round glass Christmas ornaments and a fairly small tree this year. I’ve used some in bowls on the end tables, and filled the inside of a glass cake stand with them, and still have a ton left. Any ideas?

I like tree branches decorated with those ornaments- you can spray the tree branch with metallic paint and glitter to dress it up if you’d like and set it upright in a vase or pot of sand or rocks.

For the cake stand it may look even better with a strand of lights wandering inside as well.

You could decoupage on favorite Christmas scenes for more indivisually unique decorations

Decorating the outside is pretty and sure to use lots as well

We used to use them to create archways in doorways as well- each was tied onto a pretty Christmas ribbon

Use them to wrap presents- either tie one onto a ribbon around a box or fill one with small items (candy, jewelry, a gift card receipt, cash) and let the recipient break it open.

tie them on to different lengths of fishing line (or similar) attach other end to dowel (or similar) and make a wall feature or hang them in your windows.

you can use a large styrofoam cone and hot glue or pin them to it until covered. this makes a nice decoration for a mantle, cofee table or an entry table. You can also use it to attach small envelopes with giftcards in.
another thing that I have done is decoupage photos onto them and affix them to the bows of gifts to the grandparents. this gives them a new ornament for their tree that shows off their grandkids.

Put some in a basket or sleigh for your table or end tables. Have a bowl of them here and there all over.
The year my daughter died, the funeral home had an ornament for everyone who attended a memorial service. Write a name with glue on the ornament, and sprinkle on glitter. Use them for place cards if you’re serving Christmas dinner.

put a rod or a piece of wire coathanger thru a piece of wood then stand it up then slide a layer of large balls down the rod, the next layer is balls a little smaller and the next layers smaller. put a pointed glass ball on the top to hide the wire. a glass ball “tree” is the general look. looks kinda neat

Crafty uses eh? Remove the hallway lightbulbs and lay the glass ornaments on the stairs and all over the floor.

Last year we painted faces and names on them and used them as place cards for Christmas dinner.

Place them inside a tall clear glass cylinder vase. Insert a battery light set along with the balls and light it. You could take your special ones and place them on top of tour candlesticks, to give them importance.

If they’re relatively sturdy, you can collage on them or even use transfer to put photos of loved ones on them, maybe even painting year numbers on them to comemorate the year the photo was taken. You can use them to make paper maiche balls.

Either keep your artwork or share them with those you care about.

If they’re strong enough, you can even break them and use the pieces for mosaics.

You can join a swap or even start a swap.

Or you can sell them on ebay.com, etsy.com or at a garage sale.

Hang them outdoors on trees, or whatever you have… or attach them to a cord (knotted) then drape or place them on a balcony, around a window, etc. (make sure they’re well attached or not over an area where they’d be a problem if they fall and break).

We also do a lot of things with glass ball ornaments using polymer clay. They can be completely covered with clay, or they can have little molded clay bits or “cane” slices, etc., glued onto them, or be partly covered in other ways. If you’re interested in those, check out this page:

(there’s also info there on how to remove the color from colored glass balls, if you should want to do that)

You win, the tree is down and in the box. I took down every ornament mleysf, along with the lights, the popcorn, every branch and the star. It was very sad ..but I decided I wanted it down before Valentine’s Day. Made it by 4 days. If there was a bet, whoever guessed February 10th at 0945 wins. End of story.

Buy a metal ‘wreath frame’ or whatever they’re called — sold at craft stores; round, stiff wire thing — and some reasonably flexible wire, and make a wreath out of them.

If at least some are the little ones — you need ’em to fill in the spaces — and the colours go well together, the finished effect is quite nice.

This gives some idea, though I was thinking of it without the greenery:

This is okay, too; a bit disco:

Unless you’re getting a larger tree next year, making something semi-permanent with them will save you having to tack up and take down every single last one wherever…

put some on your plants and if you have a staircase you could hang some there

It was said they were created to scare away the evil spirits and protect who ever used them……………………..

get some nice ribbon/garland/ or fishing wire and hang them at all lengths from your light fixture above the diningroom table OR hang them about 6 inches apart at defferent lengths from the top of your front window frame. so it looks like a curtain/garland.

you could make them into candles maybe. its a good arts and crafts activity for kids too. all you gotta do is cut pieces of tissue paper (different colors) then glue them on the glass. then put one of those small candles ( the ones that are round and are in a metal outside ) and it looks really pretty xD

hang them on the outside, on your trees and shrubs along with the christmas lights
hang them around your home like dangling dececorations
hang one on your rear-view mirror in your vehicle

I did three different things with left over christmas ornaments this year. I had a bunch of mini ball shaped ornaments so I filled up some big marinti glasses and lined the mantel with them. Then in the small windows of my entry way I hung them on clear wire, so it looked like they were falling down at different levels from the curtain rod. It looks so cute. Then I did a similar effect around the edges of the ceiling walking into my parlor were I have the tree set up. I really think it adds a cute and festive touch, if you can picture it.

You could donate them to a local homeless shelter. They put up Christmas trees and always gladly accept donations. Give the gift of being Merry and Bright to those less fortunate this holiday season.

How about decorating a wreath or a garland with your Christmas ornaments? Or, if you have a ceiling fan or a chandelier, you can attach a small wreath to it and the hanging ornaments to the wreath. Make sure that the ceiling fan is turned off 🙂

In my bathrooms, I bought some really nice baskets and filled them with pine cones, and ornaments…tying a nice bow with some wired ribbon on them. Just a small touch without the need for a tree.

Besides using them in really pretty bowls everywhere (including my bathrooms), I place them on my mantel, mixed in with my garland and snow globes. I also put them in one of the very biggest bowls or silver tubs I have, and put them on the floor in front of the fireplace. They always look so beautiful when the lights are shining on them.

PUT GARLAND SWAG ON STAIRCASE SECURELY THEN USE THE GLASS ORNAMENT LIKE YOU WOULD ON YOUR TREE. I HAVE SOME EXTRA LONG AND HEAVY GLASS ORNAMENTS THAT ALSO HAVE CERAMIC FEATURES ON THEM AND I COULD NEVER USE THEM ON MY TREE SO THIS IS PERFECT FOR A MANTLE OR STAIRCASE IDEA. I ALSO DECORATE SANTA’S SLEIGH WITH FAKE PRESENTS AND GLASS BALLS IN THE SLEIGH. ANOTHER THING I DO IS IF I HAVE ENOUGH OF A THEME ,I USE ALL I HAVE RATHER THAN A MIXTURE.EXAMPLES ARE ALL REINDEER,ALL SANTA, ALL ANGELS, OR ALL GINGERBREAD MEN. ANOTHER IDEA THAT I HAVE USED IS TO HANG ONE TO EACH DOOR HANDLE AND I PURCHASED SMALL DIFFERENT COLORED TINSEL TREES AND PUT 24′ TREES DOWN HALLWAY,OR PLACE THE SMALL TREES WITH SANTA AND THE SLEIGH GROUPING I USE INFOORS EACH YEAR. IF MY TINSEL TREE IS BLUE I WILL PUT ALL SILVER BALLS ON IT,IF RED MAYBE ALL GREEN BALLS AND IF SILVER USE BLUE WISH EVERYONE OUT THERE TO HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS IN 2014.
