When you create a contact sheet, either from a sheet of negatives or any sort of transparent item, you first lay the item on the light sensitive material you are using and then lay clear glass on top of that. The glass creates constant and even contact of the materials preventing out of focus areas which is what you would have if it was warped or something. The glass also serves to hold the negative in place because if it moved just a hair even you would have two out of register images.
