Maybe they used to lock their housekeeper in while they were away at work. I would think locking from the outside is against the fire exit codes.

Do you mean bars that swing out in front of the sliding glass doors? The bars swing out because they couldn’t swing “in” to the sliding glass doors? Just a guess………

just a shot in the dark….but did the previous owner have guard dogs? if it was a high crime area, and in hot climate it may have been to allow the animals(dog/dogs) fresh air to keep a place from overheating. as well as the barking may have been a good deterant from any would be burglers.

it is quite possible that the previous owners traveled alot and they just felt safer if they could lock the gate as they left.

My guess is that some one wanted bars for over the patio doors but didn’t want them to swing in.
If the doors would swing in they take up space that they didn’t want to waste.

The doors and it’s bars were installed backwards. If they where flipped around and reinstalled they would lock on the inside. Someone didn’t know how to properly install them.

Is there a chance that there was another room on the other side of the doors?. It still doesn’t make sense. For whatever reason, the price was right. Have someone remove those fire hazards soon.
