Is there any way to keep birds from flying into our large plate glass windows?
We live in the woods and the birds fly at a high rate of speed thru the trees and do not notice that there are windows in front of them.
They bang into the plate glass and some die. Some just get addled and then fly away when they come to their senses.
It is pitiful, and I am sure there is a way to stop it from happening. I just can’t think of a way to show the birds a detour sign.

I had the same problem, so I hung hummingbird feeders from the eves. I used copper wire – made a loop at the bottom – and hung 3 of them at different heights. I don’t live there now, but I don’t remember having anymore crashes.

We had the same problem in our college so one of the professors drew a shadow of a hawk on a black construction paper (found everywhere used for drawing) and cut it and taped it to the window. This way the birds know that something is there, or you can tape any other object if you don’t want to scare the birds with a picture of a hawk.

put some stickers/decals on the doors – you can get some really nice ones if you look around

The main reason birds fly into windows is that the only see the reflection of what behind them, causing them to think there is more space as well as trees for safety. For instance, they were in the area looking for food and they got spooked (by a hawk shadow or another birds warning call) and they fly up into the window because all they see is the reflection behind them, . The main thing to do is break up the reflection so they realize its not just more yard. Decals are a popular way to go as is hanging things in front of your window. Effectivness varies for each person it seems. Experiment with both to see which works best for you.
