In Glasstop tables,you could c metal legs fixed to Glass plate through a small metal disc.How is this done?

In modern furniture you could notice the all glass tops having a smal metal ( I believe its polished steel!) disc affixed to them to which other parts are fixed. How is this metal disc attached to the glass at the first place. Is this simple process which you can do it yourself. Or need machinery in place for it.
