If one had to activate the fire alarm in a fire how do you smash the glass?
On a fire alarm in the UK where it says”Smash Glass” Can you kick it or do you hit it with your hand? Why is there a place to press with your thumb? Who would smash it with their hand and who would push it with their thumb? Do you know anyone that ever had to activate one? Can it take two people to smash the glass?

I’d break it anyway I could so that I could warn everyone else and then get the hell out of the burning building!

I actually had to do this once. There was a fire in my building and the sign said “In Case of Fire, Break Glass”. I didn’t have anything to break it with and was worried that if I punched/kicked it I would cut myself. I opened up the display case by the handle, grabbed the fire extinguisher, and used it to smash the glass. Afterwards, I wondered what purpose breaking the glass actually did since I already had the fire extinguisher in my hands.

I would wrap a piece of cloth around my hand and punch it, as I have done (without cloth as I had none)

The glass on them is not thick. Its easily broken with your hand. You could also use a pencil or pen or anything with an edge. I would rather take the chance of a cut on my hand than burning to death !!!

Hi,
The glass in most modern fire points isn’t actually glass but plastic which is perforated down the middle. If you push it with your thumb in the middle it will break in two. I have never known anyone cut theirselves whilst operating a fire point. A ladies heel is also a common tool for breaking them!
