I have a very small shard of glass in my finger, do u think it will work its way out? my finger is swollen.?
i did go to the doctor and he did try and remove it and i think it is still in there, it is swollen and hurts real bad, the glass has been in there sence thanksgiving, the doctor tried to get it out last friday, now i have to go to get an x-ray and to another doctor, so do you think it will come out by itself?

Because the glass is not readily extractable, what you described is a deep wound and so the shard is very unlikely to come out by itself. The swelling and pain are symptoms of regional inflammation caused by the foreign body (piece of glass) logged in your finger. There is likelihood that you have a bacterial infection because the piece of glass is likely to be non-sterile. If you have a fever or develop a fever, then you likely have an infection. In that case, you definitely need to get it out so that the wound can be cleaned and accessed for the type of infection. If it is determined that you have an infection you may need to get a shot or be given a course of antibiotics.

if it is as serious as what you mention. you have to have it surgically removed.
you can’t take these chances that the shard will emerge itself.
you will face the possibility of secondary infection which will be a bigger problem by itself.
so please go get it done.

if you are going to a second doc for x rays and it has been there that long ( i guess its not as long if you are american) then i think you should have it removed. have you tried squeezing the area and getting it out like a blackhead??

they seldom come out by themselves. I treat mine by sterilizing the skin, piercing it with a lancet, and grabbing the shard with a tweezers. Sure it hurts, but the shard will hurt more. so far, Almighty God has been merciful to me and helped me thru it.

It sounds like maybe it’s deeply imbeded in your finger. Have you tried using a drawing salve (like boil ease)? That might help, plus it has an antibacterial in it in case it’s a secondary infection.

You know, i had 1 on my thumb too a while back ago. I didnt really know what it was, until it started coming out on its own. My finger would hurt, but i never paid attention to it until the shiny glass started coming out. When i realized what it was, i dissinfected a needle with some alcohol, and took it out.

go to the ER or another Dr. and get it out of there. It sounds like its becoming infected, and it could move into your blood stream.

Let the doctor get it out with minor surgery. If you leave it in, it can cause sepsis & you’ll wind up in the hospital. Foreign objects can cause major infections in your body.
I had a piece of glass in my palm for several days. It had to be removed with minor surgery & I was lucky too. It was starting to become seriously infected. I ended up on Levaquin, which is a high end antibiotic for 14 days.
Let the doctors make sure the glass is completely gone with x-rays.

I seriously doubt it’s going to come out by itself. The fact that it’s swollen is a sign that it may be getting infected which could cause you more damage than just a hurt finger in the longrun. Have a doctor remove it before it does any real damage.

I would soak it in hot water and epsom salt. If there is an infection that should draw it out…u may have to do it more than once. Once the swelling goes down it will be less tender. Take a sterilized needle or pointed tweezer and try to open it a little…soak it some more. If it doesnt ease its way out and feel better in a day or so I would go to the dr.

I once removed glass with tweezers from my b/f’s arm that had been in there for over a year. So, yeah. it’s still in there and you could be daring and try to cut your skin to fish it out, but you run the risk of infection and not finding the glass itself. It’s not going to come out by itself. Just go to the other doc and have the x ray taken and maybe they can take care of it for you.
