How to break the seal on a small glass container?

This is a glass container from France with fois gras inside and a rubber gasket (?) between the top and bottom. I’m afraid to insert a knife — and splinter the glass. Tried to tap the lid off (hard) with a rubber mallet, but that didn’t work.
