How much money could I get for recycling soda cans, glass, and plastic in California?
I am trying to make a couple extra bucks and I figured recycling is a good way to make a couple extra bucks. So I was wondering how much money I could get by recycling soda cans, glass, plastic (like waterbottles), and paper/cardboard. 10 points for the most accurate and best info. Thanks

You can indeed make some extra money by simply recycling your household aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass containers. My family seperates our recyclables into three plastic bins and then turns them into our local recycling center once a month. We usuallly get anywhere between $12.00 -$22.00 depending on how much we turn in. It doesn’t take much effort, it helps the enviornment, and you are really just getting the money back since you pay extra for the CRV (California Redemption Value) when you buy the can, bottle, or container at the store. To find the nearest recycling center in your area, use the link below and enter your zip code.
For more information, I would suggest checking with the Integrated Waste Management Board. The Board is partnering with the private sector, the EPA, and the other states to provide citizens with an environmental information system that can be customized for each community. The system, which operates over the Internet and through an interactive phone system, provides a single source of community-specific environmental and recycling information. This information is available 24 hours a day over the Internet at http://www.earth911.org. and by dialing 1-800-CLEAN-UP. Once you enter your five-digit ZIP code, you’ll be able to access a wide variety of information, including local recycling information, household hazardous waste collections, and environmental events.

Don’t they have a 5 cent deposit on containers out there – that’s a lot more then here. Collect them and turn them in.

It’s a nickel for containers under 24 oz., 10 cents for the bigger ones. Aluminum cans are definitely worthwhile to go out and collect, plastic is bulky enough and glass is heavy enough that people who are only interested in the profit generally avoid it unless they have a specialized setup, such as a cleanup gig for a bar or special event.

You wanted to make a couple extra bucks, well that’s what you’ll make!! The amount of material you collect and the effort you put into it will make all the difference as far as how much money you can make. And you get it tax free, so maybe that could be a new “career” for you.

I think you could make a couple bucks. It all really depends on how much you collect. If you just wanted to make the money i would save the cans that say CA 5 cents or 10 cents. I live in AZ and wish i could make money on them, but can’t.

The reward you get from recycling is helping to improve the environment. This is much greater than any monetary reward! In Michigan, we get 10 cents per bottle or can. The bottles dont say how much for California, it just says CA-Cash Refund

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger passed legislation (AB 3056) to increase California Refund Value in the following calendar year. Effective January 1, 2007, recycling centers pay consumers 5 cents for containers less than 24 oz. and $.10 for containers 24 oz. or more. Redemption Value (the deposit customers pay at retail purchase), however, will remain $.04 and $.08 (respectively) through July 1, 2007. If the recycling rate has not reached 75% by this time, Redemption Value will also increase to $.05 and $.10. In other words, for the first half of 2007, consumers can enjoy a refund rate higher than the deposit rate.

Well in Texas aluminum cans are going for 45 cents a pound at this time, we save ours then crush them and add the money we get to our 4yr olds bank account, for her future .

Don’t know about California but, in CT we get .05 per can or bottle if they are marked. Some are more and if they are from out of state we get a little less if we take them to a redemption center. Otherwise we just take them to the grocery store and put them in the machines where they are crushed and they spit out a slip of paper that we take to the cashier. You can make a few extra bucks but, I don’t think you’re gonna get rich.

What if all that plastic was used to make insulation, and simulated biodegradable wood to build homes.
You can recycle can’s by making these hat’s that I’ve seen people make out of different kinds of soda/beer cans. I think it could be ground up and used to insulate, or in building homes and businesses. All the trash in the city dumps could be recycled to make insulation for homes, or shingles for roofs. If they can make recycled paper they can do something with the trash we toss out.

I have been trying to research on-line as to whether or not I would actually get back the CRV I originally paid out at the store, as far as I can tell, the most I can hope to get, my entire 10 cents back from the 2 liter soda bottles, is if I only return 50 bottles at a time. Otherwise they will be measured by weight, not by each CRV deposit I had spent. Which I am sure will be much less than my original 10 cents if weighed. And I am sure this how the recyling centers make money, otherwise why would they bother?
So the real question is whether or not the $5 is worth the trouble or not.
And I still would have to take the 50 bottles and see if the center is actually going to count my bottles or give me attidude about my wanting them to count them! Does anyone have any experience taking their 50 bottles to be counted?

You can be paid by weight or by container at any recycle site for plastic, glass, and aluminum beverage containers. Make sure to request a count if you would like to be paid by container (up to 50 of each material).

I am going to double check my state because I never knew you could recycle for money. I thought all the states had recycling programs like the trash collection.
Thanks you for the information!

If got to bendover that many times for a dollar… Ha, ha, it would better to just cut the ends off the cans and find a better use for this stuff. Make smoking pipes, construction matiral, arts and crafts, lets shut it down. Poeple don’t brake your back for cents when you should be making alot more for efforts. God bless us all… if only he would during these times of desspare.

Hi, Neat post. There’s a problem with your website in internet explorer, could check this? IE nonetheless is the marketplace leader and a big portion of people will leave out your excellent writing because of this problem.
