You have to cut it before it is tempered. If you cut it and scratch it, it will shatter.

So you need to buy a new piece of glass. Sorry,

Find someone with a water jet cutter they are fairly common among metal fabricators and will cut anything including tempered glass.

you’re screwed. you will need to precut to the size, then temper it. the tempering process places the outside edges at a different stress level (extremely high) versus the center. when one propagates a crack in tempered glass, the difference in stress causes the whole piece to release its stress.
there are local companies all over that service industry with special made to order glass. a piece like what you are talking about will run 100-200. In our area, the company name is Glass Enterprise.

It isn’t possible to cut tempered glass. A waterjet or laser or wet saw or any other method of cutting tempered glass will leave you with a pile of tiny glass chips.

To follow up what FF stated, the center 58% of tempered glass is in tension while the outer 21% (each side of the center) is in compression. If you breach the layers (no matter how is done) the glass WILL shatter…physics at work. There is no way to avoid it.

If you look carefully at the edge of a little piece of shattered tempered glass you can actually see the border of the two layers

Tempered glass has been heat treated after being cut to proper size for strength. It cannot be cut afterward without large machine tools or shattering, as you have already experienced. Practically speaking, it is impossible for the typical homeowner to do.

    Good Luck

You can not cut or drill tempered glass. When you penetrate the surface it shatters.

Well, I bought a slab of tempered glass to go on a coffee table, and the glas co. cut it to size at the shop and delivered it.

I’d suggest taking it to a glazer and see if they will do it for you. Call around first.

Use lexan. Much cheaper, easy to cut and safe for sliding doors.

I agree with those who have stated that tempered glass cannot be cut. As you found out, it shatters. Tempered glass is ordered as per the needed size.

Go to the glass cutter. they have different tools and the know how to get it right. and it costs beans compared to replacing the whole piece.
