How did my glass lense (like a magnifying glass) break by itself?
I kept it on top of my buffet. One day it fell on the floor all by itself. It was broken in half. The strange thing is, it didn’t break because of the fall. One half was still on top of the buffet. Any explanation for this?

When glass is made it is melted from sand, sodium, lime, things to change the index of refraction, color, other things. A magnifying lens may have a lot of stuff added to increase the refractive index so it magnifies more. When cooling it must be done slowly with particularly a long time above its annealing temperature. This allows all of the parts to cool together. Other wise the outside can cool faster than the inside forming a tension. There maybe other strains as well that settle out during the cooling processes. If there are strains, they may be enough to break the glass for no apparent reason. I have this happen to my glass blowing pieces. sometimes years later.
