Finger in the glass Riddle – let's see if a new crop of people can get it right!?
If you like really good riddles and challenges you can get more of these at http://www.mindchallenger.com Try to solve this before going there for the answer. There are new ones posted at the beginning of each month.
You have a glass of water sitting on a perfectly balanced scale. You put your finger into the glass and into the water. Your finger does not touch the glass. It only is submerged in the water. It makes the water go higher up the sides of the glass but it does not overflow. What happens to the glass side of the scale? Does it go down, stay the same or go up?

It would go down. There is force pushing on the water.

it goes down obviously. you’re finger is less dense than water so you’re exerting force to displace the water.

yeah, me too… i would say stays the same… the water would displace cuz of the finger, but not weigh any more with the ‘bouyant’ finger.

Wouldn’t it go up because your adding more mass? How about that im asking the question in the answer column.

It stays the same, it will not add any weight, only volume.

while trying not to sound really geeky.. i’d guess that because the volume of the water went up, there was a change in mass, and the glass side of the scale would be heavier.

it would stay the same. you changed to density inside the glass, but you did not change the weight.

It’ll stay the same.
The finger just increases the volume, the mass stays the same.

The scale will remain the same.
