Dog has a cut on his paw.. is limping.. almost sure its from glass shards..?
Im pretty sure my dog stepped on broken glass today while at the park. He was fine for a few hours until we got home at he started limping. I examined his paw and noticed a very small cut/gash about a mil deep. I took a light to it and didnt see shards, but could tell that the cut area was very sensitive for him. Any advice? Being Sat. night, nothing is open, i think. Also, im by myself and he weighs about 70lbs so taking tweezers to the paw is out of the question. Should i clean it? Anything i can rub on it? Should i give it a couple days? He’s obviously in pain. Thanks in advance.

My dog’s trained well enough that I can do anything to her paws. I’d say right now it’s rather imperative that you get this glass out before it becomes any worse. If you have to, muzzle your dog while you take it out. If removing the glass simply is not an option, put s ome rubbing alchol on it to disinfect the cut (your dog isn’t going to appreciate that) and cover it as best you can. If you have a “cone” around youe house, put it on so he can’t lick the wound and infect it more.
And call your vet anyways. Even if your vet isn’t open, call a different vet. you need to get that looked at asap. Perhaps your vet makes house calls?

I would not mess around. If you dog gets an infection, it could be a major problem. Another thing that you could run some water over it. Hopefully the water might gently remove the glass. Maybe you could very, very gently put an antibacterial cream on his foot and bandage it up until you get to the VET. Good luck.

I wouldn’t rub it, that could cause the glass to do more irritating and get lodged in further. Rinsing it and giving it a gentle clean should be fine and try and keep him off the foot.
There should be a emergency vet open near by, best to call them and get some advice or better yet go down and have the wound treated. Also it sounds like it is quite sore and he good use some pain relief.

I would rub some peroxide over it with a q-tip. (lightly) then cover it wit something until you can take it to the vet and get a closer look at the cut. Hope it is nothing serious.

My dog used to get a cut on her paw once every two months or so, thanks to the dopey bastarbs that break stubbies on the ground. She’d limp for a day, then she’d be fine. She never got glass in the cut. And let her lick it, thats how they keep it clean. Its more likely to get infected if you dont let her lick it.

Keep it clean and put an antibiotic ointment on it. Neosporin or something similar. If it gets infected, then take him to the vet. If it does n’t get infected, it will heal by itself. You could give him an aspirin for the pain.

Sounds like a small laceration. If the area is not bleeding profusely, you can soak the paw in a mixture of warm water and Epsom salts for about 15-20 minutes 2xs a day for a few days.. The salts will draw out any pieces of glass that might be in the paw. You can also put a dab of neosporin on it or some kind of antibiotic ointment. In a few days to a week, her paw should heal fine. In the meantime, give her paw time to heal so no hard walking.
