Can you catch a sun tan through glass?
Please can some one help us .My husband says that you can catch a sun tan if the sun is shining on you through a window where I say that you can not as the glass breaks down the suns rays. Who is right as we can put an end to this disagreement

Depending on the type of glass, (ie uv ray reducing), you can get a tan through it.
Pure glass can transmit UV Rays and give you a tan although it will take more time as the UV is diminished.
It is a safer way to tan as it is more gradual.
If the glass is convex or the shape of a paraballa like a magnifying glass, then you will increase the UV rays and burn.

im no expert, but im under the impression that you CANT get a tan through glass.

You can but the process is much slower than outside.

I think you can. glass magnifies the suns rays
fires have been started with sun’s rays thru a window

it doesn’t seem that you can get a tan – glass blocks UVB rays which cause sunburn.
but you CAN get skin cancer because glass doesn’t block UVA rays which are the cancer-causing ones.
scary eh!

Yes, depending upon the thickness and composition of the glass.

I got sunburn on my arm once through the car window so it does burn, whether it tans or not I don’t know.

No cos the glass protects you

Blatently, probably more so than normal. hink about a green house.
Or how glasses can focus light, i’d guess they work the same way as other waves.

If the glass is polarized, or has a UV coating, then no you can’t get burned, but if it’s just regular glass – yes you can get badly burned.

You can. Haven’t you ever went for a long drive and had a sunburn on one arm and not the other even though you were in an ac car? A tinted window may break down the UV rays but not disintegrate it

Yes you can my husband used to drive a bus for a living and the arm nearest the window was tan!!

No I don’t think you can tan through glass, if anything you may just burn.

You talking about a window ? Of course you can get a tan from the sun ! It might even make the sun rays stronger. Sorry, hubby is right this time. If the glass is clear, it does’nt break down the rays at all…

MAN HOW STUPID ARE YOU LOT. NOOOOO GLASS HAS UV PROTECTION STOPPING ANY UV RAYS COMING THROUGH. ONLY UV RAYS GIVE YOU A SUN TAN, SO NOOOOOOOO.

i think yes because the UV rays can still pass through because the glass reflects them instead of absorbing them, but thats just my opinion lol x x

Ordinary window glass stops most, but not all, of ultraviolet rays. So one could get a tan, but not very quickly. However, the ultraviolet will fade your draperies.

yes you most certainly can catch a sun tan through glass, however, you cannot catch a glass through a sun tan. The glass will stop at the tan every time. I swear to Bob I’ve tried it!
all joking aside, think tanning beds: do people lay on the bulbs? or are the bulbs covered? If they layed on the bulbs wouldn’t the bulb be glass? Tell your husband you love him for putting up with you. It’s called logic, you should carry it with you for future use..

I read somewhere that window panes are made of soda glass and the sodium blocks much of the sunlight that causes sunburns and tans. Ironically, a sun porch may not be the best place to get a sun tan.

You are both half right.
The lead in the glass stops a lot of the UV’s but not all of them

It depends on whether the glass is tinted or not, and what it is tinted with.
I have gotten sunburned while driving, even though I kept my windows up — so, yes, you can get a tan through plain window glass.

i always have one arm browner than the other from driving! sunbeds have glass to protect you from tubes n you still tan with them.
the sun won’t be quite as strong but it is still there take a look a wallpaper near to a window, which has been up for a while and it’ll be bleached.

There`s some diffusion and absorption when sunlight shines through regular window panes so tanning is out ,however there are certain wavelengths still there that WILL burn you.

tough to answer from all scientific points but the wife of the bus driver seems to be able to know first hand….Evidence cant lie

Most glass is opaque to UV light and so it is very hard to get a tan through normal glass. Special glass such as quartz glass can be made that is transparent to UV. This type of glass is used in sunbed lamps. Maybe the drivers who are getting a lopsided tan had their windows open?

What about all those plants grown in glass greenhouses? I’m pretty sure UV rays go through the glass… but I think due to the climate control in a glass greenhouse, you wouldnt get anymore of a tan than being outside at that temp…usually around 75*. I live in Phoenix AZ, I dont get tan sitting on my couch with the shades open, it’s only 78* in here… 110* outside…
